The festival opens with THE VILLAGE NEXT TO PARADISE, the feature debut by Somalian director Mo Harawe. As a single father, Mamargade struggles with the challenges of everyday life in a remote village in Somalia. Following her divorce, his sister Araweelo looks to find a home at his place, while his son Cigaal sometimes feels neglected during the period of turbulence that the fragile family is living through. Mamargade needs money, as his income as a freelance gravedigger isn’t enough. At the same time, Araweelo is looking for a way to make her dream of owning her own tailor’s shop a reality. Despite their differing goals, the unconventional family eventually finds its way through love, trust and confidence. This atmospheric family drama was the first ever Somali film to celebrate its international premiere in the “Un Certain Regard” competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The director will be attending the screening. (fw)
